Dr. Chris Cigolea is a distinguished Romanian-born musician and educator, renowned for his contributions as a trumpet player, conductor, and music director. He began his formal music education at the National University of Music in Bucharest, Romania. In 1996, he relocated to Canada, where he furthered his studies, earning a Master of Music in Performance in 2001 and a Doctor of Musical Arts in 2014, both from the University of Toronto.
Throughout his career, Dr. Cigolea has held several prominent positions in the Canadian music community. He served as the Music Director and Conductor of the Guelph Concert Band and was the founding conductor of the Guelph Youth Symphony Orchestra. In addition, he established the C.I.G. School of Performing Arts in Guelph and taught at the University of Guelph. In 2016, Dr. Cigolea was honored with the Guelph Mayor’s Award, recognizing his significant contributions to the city’s cultural landscape.
Currently, Dr. Cigolea is a Music Director and Teacher at Upper Canada College in Toronto, where he teaches students in Years 8, 9, and 10, and leads the intermediate jazz, senior jazz, and symphonic bands. Under his guidance, his students achieved a gold medal in the instrumental jazz division at The Nationals for MusicFest Canada, held at the University of Toronto.
